The German Literature Institute Leipzig (DLL) hopes that the International Congress of Creative Writing Programs, which will take place at the same time as the Leipzig Book Fair 2005 in cooperation with numerous partners around the world, will be a platform for regular networking. A total of roughly 50 institutes from all over the world will have the opportunity in Leipzig to discuss the various didactic approaches and major topics of their programmes. In addition to academic lectures, there are also plans for an extensive supporting programme. This will include a series of readings with internationally renowned authors linked to creative writing schools, platform discussions and public lectures.

Is literary writing learnable?
From March 15th through March 18th, 2005, writers and teachers of creative writing programs will discuss the teachability and learnability of literary writing at the Congress Center Leipzig. The congress will present various different approaches to teaching as well as confer about particularly European ways of educating authors.
The German Literature Institute Leipzig celebrates its 10th anniversary
Ten years after its foundation, the German Literature Institute Leipzig (DLL) still offers Germany’s only full-time academic creative writing program. The first International Congress of Creative Writing Programs therefore is a celebratory event for the institute’s anniversary: “During the last decade, highly qualified creative writing programs have been founded all over Europe. The German Literature Institute has been the leading force in Germany and now wants to spearhead the advancement of a European creative writing network,” says the institute’s director Professor Josef Haslinger. Together with his colleague Hans-Ulrich Treichel, Haslinger has developed the idea of fusing the creative writing forces in Europe.
A European Creative Writing Network
The first step in building this international network is the International Congress of Creative Writing Programs. More than 30 institutes and creative writing programs from all over Europe and the US have announced their participation, among them the renowned Iowa Writer’s Workshop and the Moscow Maxim-Gorky-Institute.
Public Events
Since Leipzig has always been a “book-city” with a huge public interest in literature and creative writing, the German Literature Institute in cooperation with the Leipzig Book Fair presents “The Long Night of Readings” at the Leipzig Moritzbastei. On Thursday, March 17th, 2005, starting at 6:00 pm, 40 German and international authors will present their work at readings and panel discussions.
International Celebrity Guests
Many well-known German and international authors will make their appearance at the congress and participate in the reading. As both teachers and students they all are involved in creative writing programs and very experienced in teaching literary writing. Among them are the South-African poet Breyten Breytenbach, the Russian writer Svetlana Vasilenko and the British Creative-Writing-legend Patricia Duncker. The list of well-known German authors includes Terezia Mora, Michael Lentz, Kerstin Hensel and Burkhard Spinnen.
The congress is open to registered visitors. Because of high demand the registration deadline has been extended to February 15th, 2005.
The First International Congress of Creative Writing Programs is an event of the German Literature Institute Leipzig (DLL) in cooperation with the Vienna Poetry School (VPS), the University of Gothenburg’s Creative Writing Program and the Writer’s Academy of Josef Skvorecky in Prague.

The German Literature Institute Leipzig (DLL) hopes that the International Congress of Creative Writing Programs, which will take place at the same time as the Leipzig Book Fair 2005 in cooperation with numerous partners around the world, will be a platform for regular networking. A total of roughly 50 institutes from all over the world will have the opportunity in Leipzig to discuss the various didactic approaches and major topics of their programmes. In addition to academic lectures, there are also plans for an extensive supporting programme. This will include a series of readings with internationally renowned authors linked to creative writing schools, platform discussions and public lectures.

Is literary writing learnable?
From March 15th through March 18th, 2005, writers and teachers of creative writing programs will discuss the teachability and learnability of literary writing at the Congress Center Leipzig. The congress will present various different approaches to teaching as well as confer about particularly European ways of educating authors.
The German Literature Institute Leipzig celebrates its 10th anniversary
Ten years after its foundation, the German Literature Institute Leipzig (DLL) still offers Germany’s only full-time academic creative writing program. The first International Congress of Creative Writing Programs therefore is a celebratory event for the institute’s anniversary: “During the last decade, highly qualified creative writing programs have been founded all over Europe. The German Literature Institute has been the leading force in Germany and now wants to spearhead the advancement of a European creative writing network,” says the institute’s director Professor Josef Haslinger. Together with his colleague Hans-Ulrich Treichel, Haslinger has developed the idea of fusing the creative writing forces in Europe.
A European Creative Writing Network
The first step in building this international network is the International Congress of Creative Writing Programs. More than 30 institutes and creative writing programs from all over Europe and the US have announced their participation, among them the renowned Iowa Writer’s Workshop and the Moscow Maxim-Gorky-Institute.
Public Events
Since Leipzig has always been a “book-city” with a huge public interest in literature and creative writing, the German Literature Institute in cooperation with the Leipzig Book Fair presents “The Long Night of Readings” at the Leipzig Moritzbastei. On Thursday, March 17th, 2005, starting at 6:00 pm, 40 German and international authors will present their work at readings and panel discussions.
International Celebrity Guests
Many well-known German and international authors will make their appearance at the congress and participate in the reading. As both teachers and students they all are involved in creative writing programs and very experienced in teaching literary writing. Among them are the South-African poet Breyten Breytenbach, the Russian writer Svetlana Vasilenko and the British Creative-Writing-legend Patricia Duncker. The list of well-known German authors includes Terezia Mora, Michael Lentz, Kerstin Hensel and Burkhard Spinnen.
The congress is open to registered visitors. Because of high demand the registration deadline has been extended to February 15th, 2005.
The First International Congress of Creative Writing Programs is an event of the German Literature Institute Leipzig (DLL) in cooperation with the Vienna Poetry School (VPS), the University of Gothenburg’s Creative Writing Program and the Writer’s Academy of Josef Skvorecky in Prague.

Zwei Leipziger Dichterschulen – eine Geschichte?

Podiumsdiskussion zur Schriftstellerausbildung am Deutschen Literaturinstitut Leipzig (DLL) und am DDR-Institut für Literatur „Johannes R. Becher“, das zwischen 1955 bis 1993 die einzige Hochschule zur Ausbildung von Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftstellern im gesamten deutschsprachigen Raum darstellte und u. a. Autor/innen wie Sarah und Rainer Kirsch, Erich Loest, Adolf Endler, Heinz Czechowski und Angela Krauß zu seinen Absolventen und Absolventinnen zählte.

Rund zwanzig Jahre nach der „Abwicklung“ des Becher-Instituts und der Neugründung des DLL soll im Rahmen des Forschungsprojekts „Literarische Schreibprozesse“ erstmals ein Erfahrungsaustausch über die Lehr- und Lernbarkeit des literarischen Schreibens und die langjährige Ausbildungspraxis an zwei Leipziger Literaturinstituten stattfinden.

Es diskutieren Katja Lange-Müller (Schriftstellerin und Absolventin des Becher-Instituts), Peter Gosse (Schriftsteller, ehem. Direktor und Dozent im „Schöpferischen Seminar Lyrik“ am Becher-Institut), Hubert Witt (Lektor und ehem. Dozent im Fach „Weltliteratur“ am Becher-Institut), Sascha Macht (Student und wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am DLL) und Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Treichel (Schriftsteller und Professor für Deutsche Literatur am DLL). Moderation: Dr. Katja Stopka.

Buchpräsentation von »Schreiben lernen im Sozialismus« – der ersten Monographie zum Institut für Literatur »Johannes R. Becher«, erschienen im Wallstein-Verlag. Ein Gespräch mit den Autor*innen Isabelle Lehn, Sascha Macht und Katja Stopka. Moderiert von Claudius Nießen.
In dem Buch geht es um die Geschichte der einzigen staatlichen Schriftstellerhochschule in der DDR und ihrer Funktion und Bedeutung im literarischen Raum der DDR. Das Leipziger Institut für Literatur »Johannes R. Becher« ist eine Schlüsselinstitution der DDR-Literaturhistorie. 1955 in der DDR gegründet, wurden hier unter den Bedingungen einer normativ dominanten Herrschaftsstruktur Prozesse und Formen des literarischen Schreibens gefördert und vermittelt. Knapp 1000 Absolventen, darunter einige später namhafte DDR-Autoren (Werner Bräunig, Adolf Endler, Rainer und Sarah Kirsch, Erich Loest, Fred Wander), wurden am Becher-Institut zwischen 1955 und 1993 literaturpädagogisch und intellektuell sozialisiert. Die Fäden von fast vierzig Jahren Literaturgeschichte der DDR laufen an einem Ort zusammen, wo ideologische Doktrin, künstlerischer Auftrag und das Streben nach ästhetisch-poetischen Freiräumen im konfliktträchtigen Widerspruch standen.
